Has there ever been a movie that you have wanted to see for a long time and when you finally got to see it you were very disappointed? Well, I have been wanting to see this film for a long time. And I am happy to say that it was everything I was hoping for an more. It is one of the best independent films that I have seen in a long time. Heck, it is one of the best films period that I have seen in a long time.
“Old Habits Die Hard” tells the story of a very dysfunctional family, The Hollis Family. What makes them dysfunctional you ask. The Hollis Family live and run a funeral home. This fact is not what makes them dysfunctional, but the way the family business is run does. Jonah (Kane Hodder) and Rendle (Jim O’Rear) are the two Hollis Brothers who run the funeral home. Allison (Stacey Dixon), the Hollis Sister, goes out on dates with men and brings them home so that her brothers can kill them and they can have them for supper. That’s right kiddies they are a family of cannibals.
Oh, I forgot to mention the little deformed daughter, Emily, that they keep locked up in a cage down in the basement.
Allison really doesn’t like this kind of behavior and escapes by drawing and coloring comic books. One day she decides that she has had enough and runs away from home and heads to the big city to seek a “real life”. She succeeds for a while but things take a turn for the worse. I am not going to give away the rest of the story. You will have to watch that for yourself but I promise you a ride you will not forget.
The thing that made this film so enjoyable for me is the excellent cast. Kane Hodder and Jim O’Rear play the perfect feuding brothers. Hodder never has a good thing to say about O’Rear and really gives him a hard way to go when he starts talking about wanting a girlfriend. In just about every scene they share they bickering back and forth or fighting. Stacey Dixon plays the perfect small town girl who just wants a house with a white fence and family but knows that she will never get it because of the situation that she was born into. Tricia Cast paints a perfect picture of a mother who is a few fries short of a happy meal. Roger Hewlett rounds out the cast as Sheriff Jimmy.
Another thing that I like about the movie is the production quality. It really has a good look and feel to it. And they way they weave the story into Allison’s comic book to tell the events of each scene is a nice touch.
If you love a good horror movie that you will want to watch more than once I highly recommend this movie. I look forward to more movie from Bloody Moon Films. They hit the ball out the ball park with this one!
