Blood On The Beach

Two weeks ago Monsters From The Basement had the pleasure of attending the first Blood On The Beach Convention in Virginia Beach, Va.  If you wanted to go to this show and didn’t you missed a good one.  I am always hoping that when a new convention pops up that they will do good and this one was spot on.  They had a over 40 guests and it was very successful in my opinion.

The fans started to line up for tickets on Friday afternoon even before the show started.  That is a very good sign for what to expect for the weekend.  The only complaint that I had about the show was the fact that the room that the celebrities were in got very crowded and it was hard to get around.  They took care of some of this on Sunday when they moved The Boondock Saints and Danielle Harris into a seperate room.  But all in all I think the promoters hit a home run with this first time show.

Like I said earlier there were over 40 guests at this show.  They offered a little bit of something for everyone.  It was impossible to get something from every star that was there but we managed to meet a lot of them.

There was a Boondock Saints reunion that featured Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flannery and David Della Rocco.  They seemed to be the most popular guest all weekend.  At one point on Saturday their line went out the door, down the hall and outside around the swimming pool area.  The line moved quickly but if you wanted to meet them you had about an hour wait.  This usually seperates the true fans from the casual ones.

 One of my favorite movies from the 80′s was Sleepaway Camp.  Two of the stars of that movie, Felissa Rose and Jonathan Tierten were on hand as well. I interviewed both of them for this website and will be posting the interview soon

Usually at a convention when they have a film reunion they might have two or three cast members, but for The Lost Boys reunion they had 5 cast members in attendence.  Edward Herrmann, Brooke McCarter, Billy Wirth, Jamison Newlander along with G Tom Mac who sang the song in the film Cry Little Sister.

 Since I started this website I have had the honor of interviewing some of my favorite horror stars.  One of my all time favorite interviews was with Tiffany Shepis.  She was a guest at Blood On The Beach.  Christi was meeting her for the first time and agreed with me that she is one of the nicest actresses you will ever meet.

 I was really looking forward to meet Cleve Hall and his ex-wife who appear in the SyFy Networks show “Monster Man”.  Cleve does special effects and makeup for movies the old fashioned way, by hand.  None of that CGI crap for him.  It was a real honor to meet these two!

 Other than The Boondock Saints we were really excited about meeting Danielle Harris from the Halloween movies.  She was very sweet and nice.  I had met he several times before but it was Christi’s first time meeting her.  We got her to sign out 30 Years Of Terror posters.

Another very popular guest was Michael Rooker.  He has been in many movies over the years but the role he is riding high on now is Merle in The Walking Dead.  We had several items to get signed by him at the show.  He is a very cool guy with a great sense of humor!

I always like to support indie film makers.  I met Matt Farnsworth and Diane Foster at the show.  Matt is the director and Diane stars in “The Orphan Killer”.  I got a copy of the movie at the show and loved it. I interviewed both of them for Monsters From The Basement and the interview will be posted very soon.  Check out this awesome flick!!

I had met Debbie Rochon at the Full Moon Horror Convention several years ago and since I started the website I always wanted to interview her.  That wish came true at Blood On The Beach.  Debbie was amazing and super nice.  She is one of those stars that never disapoints.  Look for her interview soon as well!!

As you can see Blood On The Beach had something for everyone into horror.  For a first time convention I think the folks at Blood On The Beach did an awesome job.  I have to tip my hat to them and hope they do it again next year.  They had a guest list to die for.  The stars that we have here in this review is just a sample of the guests.  I only wish that we could have got pictures and autographs from everyone.

A big thank you goes out to the staff of Blood On The Beach and to convention organizer Al Keisel aka Dark Shutter for making Monsters From The Basement feel right at home in Virginia Beach.  We will be back next year and I hope to see you there as well!!!

Full Moon 2012 Poster

The very first horror convention that I ever attended was the Full Moon Tattoo And Horror Convention that is held each spring in Nashville Tn. I look forward to this show each and every year. My friends Ben and Stacey Dixon are the organizers of the show and they do a top notch job each and ever year.

One thing I really liked about this years Full Moon Convention was the fact that this year it was held at the Nashville Convention Center in the heart of downtown Nashville.  The convention was in on huge area.  I have to say I really like it when conventions are like this and not in several different rooms at a hotel.  I think a lot of conventions should look at this and move toward this type of setup!

There were several stars that we were really looking forward to meeting.

The first one was Norman Reedus from “The Walking Dead” and “The Boondock Saints”.  He was very nice and very personable.  I really enjoyed meeting him.

One of the most popular cable tv show has to be HBO’s “True Blood”.  Kristin Bauer stars as Pam in that show and she was another one of the guests that we were really wanting to meet.  She is just as pretty as she is on the show and one of the most popular guests at the show.

Another really popular star that was at Full Moon was Kane Hodder.  He was Jason in several of the “Friday The 13th” films.  Kane is a regular guest at Full Moon.

Another actor who appeared as Jason was Richard Brooker.  He appeared in the third installment of the “Friday The 13th” series.  He is the first Jason that wore the famous hockey mask in Part 3.  He had some very cool Jason masks for sale at the show.

There were three Jasons total at the show.  Ted White was the third.

 Not only were there stars from “Friday The 13th”,  there were also stars from the “Halloween” movies as well.

Brad Loree who played Michael Myers in “Halloween Resurrection” make his first visit to The Music City for the Full Moon Show.

Leslie Easterbrook has been in countless movies over the years.  One of her recent roles was that of Mother Firefly in Rob Zombie’s “Devils Rejects”.  I was really excited about meeting her and conducted an interview with her for this website that will be posted very soon.

In addition to Norman Reedus, there were several other memebers of ”The Walking Dead” cast on hand.  One was Madison Lintz who had one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the shows second season as Sophie.

One of the first horror movies that really got to me was “I Spit On Your Grave”.  Camille Keaton was the female lead in the film.  If you have seen it you will know what part got to me.

Robert Carradine was at the show too.  One of the most popular movies he was in has to be “Revenge Of The Nerds”.  He was at Fright Night last year but I didn’t get a chance to meet him so I was glad he was at Full Moon

 This was the 11th year of the Full Moon Tattoo and Horror Convention and from the looks of things this show shows no sign of slowing down.  Top notch guests along with a great venue and great fans all add up to a fun weekend.  I will be attending the Full Moon Show as long as they put it on.  It is good having a convention in my back yard that I don’t have to travel a long distance to.

I would like to say a big thanks to Ben and Stacey Dixon for putting on one of the south’s best horror conventions.  Looking forward to next years show!!!

Mad Monster Party

Two weeks ago Monsters From The Basement attended North Carolina’s very first horror convention, The Mad Monster Party.  The show was organized by Joe Moe.  Joe was a member of the Bat Pack that took care of Forrest J Ackerman (Famous Monsters Magazine) the last years of his life.

Christi lives about an hour from Charlotte so we decided to drive home each night after the convention instead of staying at the hotel.  The hotel was very nice and offered plenty of room for the show.  The Blake Hotel had a kind of a Outlook Hotel (The Shining) feel to it on the inside.

 The only complaint I had about the whole weekend was that the people giving out the passes to the convention on the first night were a bit unorganized and confused about what they were doing.  We stood in line for 45 minutes to get our passes at 5 pm only to find out that they were only giving out the VIP passes at 5 and we couldn’t get ours until 6pm when the doors to the show opened.  But we didn’t let that one little glitch spoil our fun.  If every convention went as smoothly as Mad Monster did I would be very happy.

At each convention there is always someone that you are really looking forward to meeting.  This show offered a wide range of stars to meet and talk to,  many were making their first convention appearence. 

Patty Mullen was the one star that I was really looking forward to meeting at this show.  Patty was in one of my very favorite horror/comedy films “Frankenhooker”.  If you have never seen the film it is about a guy who’s girlfriend gets chopped up by a lawn mower and he saves her head and gets body parts from hookers to put her back together.  Patty was so very sweet to her fans.  I think she is one of the nicest coolest people I have ever met.

 The coolest part of the weekend was when Patty got into her Frankenhooker makeup and posed for pictures with her fans.  This was a dream come true for me.

We had a great time at The Mad Monster Party.  It will be on the list of my favorite convention experiences so far this year.  The guests were all very nice and kind.  The staff were also very nice.  Lots of time conventions don’t live up to all the hype that is promised.  I know that is hard to do sometimes but Joe Moe and crew sure pulled it off with this one.  Mad Monster Party is one show we will retun to for sure.

Thanks Joe for bringing horror to North Carolinia.  See you next year!!!
