Mad Monster Party
Two weeks ago Monsters From The Basement attended North Carolina’s very first horror convention, The Mad Monster Party. The show was organized by Joe Moe. Joe was a member of the Bat Pack that took care of Forrest J Ackerman (Famous Monsters Magazine) the last years of his life.

Charlotte NC
Christi lives about an hour from Charlotte so we decided to drive home each night after the convention instead of staying at the hotel. The hotel was very nice and offered plenty of room for the show. The Blake Hotel had a kind of a Outlook Hotel (The Shining) feel to it on the inside.

The Blake Hotel
The only complaint I had about the whole weekend was that the people giving out the passes to the convention on the first night were a bit unorganized and confused about what they were doing. We stood in line for 45 minutes to get our passes at 5 pm only to find out that they were only giving out the VIP passes at 5 and we couldn’t get ours until 6pm when the doors to the show opened. But we didn’t let that one little glitch spoil our fun. If every convention went as smoothly as Mad Monster did I would be very happy.
Patty Mullen
At each convention there is always someone that you are really looking forward to meeting. This show offered a wide range of stars to meet and talk to, many were making their first convention appearence.
Patty Mullen was the one star that I was really looking forward to meeting at this show. Patty was in one of my very favorite horror/comedy films “Frankenhooker”. If you have never seen the film it is about a guy who’s girlfriend gets chopped up by a lawn mower and he saves her head and gets body parts from hookers to put her back together. Patty was so very sweet to her fans. I think she is one of the nicest coolest people I have ever met.

It seemed liked she really enjoyed meeting her fans at Mad Monster Party. She even left our friend James a message on his voice mail.

The coolest part of the weekend was when Patty got into her Frankenhooker makeup and posed for pictures with her fans. This was a dream come true for me.

Christi and I both are huge fans of the movie “Fright Night”. Two stars from that film were at Mad Monster, Chris Sarandon and Stephen Geoffreys. We had watched the movie the night before just to prime ourselfs for meeting these two crowd favorites.

Chris was also the voice of Jack Skellington in “The Nightmare Before Christmas”

One of my very favorite actresses was also a guest at Mad Monster Party, Linda Blair. This was the 5th time that I had met her. She is such a sweetheart!

We attended the tribute to the late great Forrest J Ackermn on Saturday

Joe Moe at Forrest J Ackerman Tribute
I really loved this tribute to Forry. Hope they do it again next year.

- Christi and Joe Turkel from “The Shining”
I am sure Joe Turkel felt right at home at The Blake Hotel. It reminded me of the Outlook Hotel in “The Shining”

Bill Mosley
No horror convention would seem complete without Bill Mosley from “Devils Rejects” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2″

One of the nicest horror stars you will ever meet is Dee Wallace from “The Fog” and “Cujo”

Being a huge music fan as well as a horror fan I love it when they book rock stars at the horror conventions. Marky Ramone was at Mad Monster Party and it was awesome meeting him for the very first time.

Richard Moll
William Katt’s costar in the film “House” was a guest too. Richard Moll who also starred in the tv show “Night Court” as Bull!
“The Creature From The Black Lagoon” is my favorite classic Universal monster. Meet Rico Browning who wore the Creature suit was quite an honor.

Christi with James Hong
We had no idea that James Hong from “Big Trouble In Little China” was the guy on “Seinfield” in the “Seinfield – 4″ episode!

I had never met Camden Toy before but Christi. I found him to be a very nice guy with a cool sense of humor as you can tell in these pictures.

GRRRRRRR!!!!

We have made friends with a few celebs along the way. Nivek Ogre from Skinny Puppy and PJ Soles are two of those.

We had a great time at The Mad Monster Party. It will be on the list of my favorite convention experiences so far this year. The guests were all very nice and kind. The staff were also very nice. Lots of time conventions don’t live up to all the hype that is promised. I know that is hard to do sometimes but Joe Moe and crew sure pulled it off with this one. Mad Monster Party is one show we will retun to for sure.
Thanks Joe for bringing horror to North Carolinia. See you next year!!!

The Full Moon Tattoo And Horror Fest was the first convention that I ever attended and fueled my addiction to conventions. This is the shows biggest year with a move to the Downtown Nashville Convention Center located in the heart of Music City USA. Lot of hotels music and resturants around to feed the needs of the horror fan. Tattoo artist and convention promoter Ben Dixon promises this will be the best show yet.

One of the best conventions I attended last year was Days Of The Dead. After the success of that show, organizers decided to hit 2012 running and announcing not one, not two but three shows for the dedicated horror fan. The first one will be held at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Atlanta, Ga. the weekend of March 9 – 11. Here is a listing of the guests confirmed for that show!!! This was the second year that I attended Scarefest. I was really impressed last year and I was blown away this year. This show is well planned out and very organized. The main thing that I love about Scarefest is that it is held in one large convention area and not several smaller rooms. I think all of the larger conventions should look at this type of set up. I for one do not like to be shoulder to shoulder contact everyone around me. Especally in the vendor roooms. It makes it so much easier to look at what everyone has for sale and you don’t feel as rushed to get away from the table and let someone else look.

One cool thing that Scarefest did for the media this year is provide us with a “red carpet” event and allow us to take pictures of the stars as they entered the building on Friday. I thought this was a nice way to kick the convention off.
John Dugan from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Making a rare convention at Scarefest this year was Lin Shaye. She starred in There’s Something About Mary, Detroit Rock City and Nightmare On Elm Street

Jennifer Blanc and Michael Biehn were at Scarefest screening their new film The Victim. I attended the screening and thought it was a really good movie. I will be reviewing it here on the web site in the next week

Erin Gray, who starred in Buck Rogers and Jason Goes To Hell was a guest this year at Scarefest

Artist Joel Robinson working the red carpet

Joel Robinson had a huge vinyl banner printed of his offical Scarefest poster. He sold tickets for a dollar each and on Saturday Night he drew out a ticket and that ticket holder won the banner. It was autographed by all the stars from Scarefest. Proceeds went to spina bifida research. I wanted to win it bad. Here Michael and Jennifer are signing the banner.
There were several Q & A sessions that I attended over the course of the weekend. The first one featured three cast memebers of my all time favorite horror flick Return Of The Living Dead. Beverly Randolph, Don Calfa and the Ultimate Scream Queen herself Linnea Quigley answered questions about the film and talked about Beverly’s upcoming doccumentary More Brains – A Return To The Living Dead
Beverly, Don and Linnea at the Return Of The Living Dead Q & A session

From time to time at conventions you will meet a star or stars who really stand out in your mind as really nice people. These three are in that group. Beverly has one of the most brightest personalities that I have ever know. Don was such a nice guy. I walked with him back to the hotel after the VIP party Saturday night and you can tell how much he appericates his fans and fans of the movie. And then there is Linnea. What can I say about her. She has been my all time favorite horror actress for many many years. It was nice to get the chance to sit down with her and talk about many different subjects. I will never forget this part of the weekend. Meeting them was a real dream come true for me. Thanks to Scarefest for bringing them to the show.

The second Q &A I attended was after the screening of Jennifer Blanc and Michael Biehn’s new movie The Victim. The film was awesome and I really wanted to hear Jennifer and Michael talk about it. If you get a chance to see this horror/comedy do so. I think you will enjoy it.

Jennifer Blanc

After the Q & A for The Victim, Michael left the room and Jennifer was joined by Danielle Harris and Brianne Davis who’s latest movie Among Friends is directed by Jennifer

I just attend a select handful of events that were going on during the weekend. There were films, panels and Q & A’s going on at all times during the fest.

Of course there were a lot of people who come dressed up. Some of the costumes were easier on the eyes than others as you can see in the picture above.

It is always good to see friends from Facebook or Monsters From The Basement. Here I am with James and his wife Abby. They live in Kentucky and I see them at a lot of conventions that we cover
Scarefest has to be one of the best shows that I have attended this year. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and the promoters had everything worked out to a tee. If you attended Scarefest leave a comment and let me know what you thought. I will be coming back to the show next year for sure.
Elvira attended the show as well but I had my pic made with her at Dragon Con so I didn’t do it again at Scarefest
I would like to thank everyone at Scarefest for putting on a Class A show

See you next year Tucky!!!
